Foden took time over injury

Ben Foden, the full back for the Northampton Saints admitted he gave up being a part of the England team for the recently concluded Six Nations Championship in order to avoid a repeat of last season’s injury woes.

The 28 year old England international has recently returned from a knee injury after missing most of last season due to ankle ligament injury twelve months prior.

Speaking to BBC Radio Northampton, Foden stated that he tried to push himself to fitness in order to make the Six Nations Championship last season and that landed him in all kinds of trouble. He admitted that he probably prolonged his injury, adding that his efforts to push himself took the injury six months to heal instead of three.

He went on to add that as a result, the Six Nations Championship was the last thing on his mind this season.

The Northampton Saints man suffered his ankle injury in September 2012 but he managed to return to action at the end of the year and also made his way into Stuart Lancaster’s squad for the Six Nations Championship. However, he did not feature in a single match for the England team in the Grand Slam after the Rugby Football Union requested the England coaching staff to rest him for a match against Gloucester Rugby.

A season on, Foden found himself with another injury, this time his knee giving way in November 2013. But this time around, he waited for the injury to heal, biding his time before returning earlier this month for the Northampton Saints at Franklin’s Gardens.

He stated that he is still not fully match fit and the lungs are struggling a bit every now and then. But his return will be a boost for the Saints who suffered back to back defeats last weekend.

Northampton Saints release two more players

Aviva Premiership Rugby Football Union club the Northampton Saints have let Tom May, the veteran centre and Scott Armstrong, the former Leeds Carnegie winger to leave the club at the conclusion of the current season. The 34 year old May, who has two international caps for England, made 26 appearances for The Saints this season, scoring four tries in the process. Overall, May played 53 games in his two seasons at Franklin’s Gardens before being released. The experienced centre has had stints with the Newcastle Falcons as well as French side Toulon.

The 26 year old Armstrong, who joined the club back in 201, played 22 matches in his three years at the club but he only made a single appearance for the Northampton Saints this season in an LV=Cup loss to Harlequins FC. The Jimmies, who lost the Aviva Premiership play-off final to their bitter rivals the Leicester Tigers last weekend has released nine players, including the aforementioned pair with Jim Mallinder, the club’s Director of Rugby looking to build on the performances of this season and mount another challenge for silverware next time around.

According to Mallinder, if a team wants to be successful, then each and every player in the squad has to make a contribution. He mentioned that every single player he had in the squad this term did their best, be it in the first team or the second, be it in training or in the analysis room or even in the team meetings.

Mallinder also went on to add that he would like to thank all the players who will not be a part of the Northampton Saints side next season for their efforts and contributions in helping the club reach their first Aviva Premiership play off final, albeit they failed to win it.

Northampton Saints tightlipped on North deal

Aviva Premiership Rugby Football Union club the Northampton Saints have refused to confirm they have clinched the deal to sign talented Welsh winger George North, despite the reports both in Wales and England suggesting that the youngster has decided to switch allegiances from the Scarlets to The Jimmies. The 20 year old has been linked to a cross Severn switch to the English club over the past one and half months and the Wales Rugby Union and the club has already been involved in a war of words over the future of the player.

North is one of the brightest young prospects to come out of the region in the last few years and was a key member of the Welsh side that won the Six Nations Championship in 2012 and 2013. But the Welsh rugby regions have struggling financially over the past couple of seasons and the WRU has accused the Scarlets of trying to make a profit by selling the player off to the Northampton Saints. The WRU has also accused the club of touting him to several high profile clubs all over Europe in order to spark a transfer tug of war.

However, the Welsh club has denied these claims from the WRU and has stated they had offered the player an improved three year deal to keep him at the club and the deal still stands. Since then, the WRU has invited all the four regions to a meeting as they attempt to thrash out a deal that will see players centrally contracted.

But it seems the player will already have signed with the Northampton Saints before the four regions sit down with the WRU for a meeting over securing the long term futures of the talents of the country to improve the game at home.

James Wilson signs new Northampton Saints deal

James Wilson, the full back for the Aviva Premiership Rugby Football Union club the Northampton Saints has signed a new and improved contract that will keep him at the Franklin’s Gardens club for the foreseeable future. The 29 year old player from New Zealand becomes the second player in the last one week to have agreed a new contract with the club after team mate Stephen Myler put pen to paper on a new and improved deal with the club on Wednesday.

Wilson arrived at the English club just last summer after spending a year with Bourgoin having spent the majority of his playing career with Southland in the Ranfurly Shield as well as the ITM Cup. And speaking about his new contract with the club, the player stated that to put it in mild words, he is absolutely over the moon. He also stated that he is grateful for Jim Mallinder, the Director of Rugby of the Northampton Saints as well as the other coaching staff for giving him the opportunity to play at the club and having been given the chance to play for a long period with the club from Franklin’s Gardens is absolutely fantastic.

Wilson stated that the team environment is extremely fantastic and he it feels great to be a proud of that environment  – adding that each and every player tries to give it his all and the club tries to play a brand of rugby that is beautiful.

Wilson also mentioned that over the next few years, he sees the Northampton Saints getting better and better and in due time, will compete with the cream of the crop. Mallinder says Northampton Saints deserved European exit

Jim Mallinder, the Director of Rugby for the Aviva Premiership Rugby Football Union club the Northampton Saints has admitted that his side deserved to be knocked out of the Heineken Cup, the most prestigious competition for rugby clubs in Europe. The Jimmies suffered a last gasp defeat at the hands of the Glasgow Warriors in Scotland when a last gasp goal from Peter Horne condemned the English club to the next few months without European games as their record is not good enough to qualify them for the next best European competition, the Amlin Challenge Cup as well.

The Jimmies, who currently lie in fifth in the Aviva Premiership table have been having a stop and start season so far, brilliant in one game and absolutely rubbish in another and they went into the game against the Scottish giants knowing only a win with a bonus point would see them stand the slightest chance of qualifying to the next stages of the competition.  But that was not meant to be and in spite of their best efforts which saw the Northampton Saints score three tries, they lost out 27-20 after Horne scored in the last seconds of the game.

And Mallinder admitted that it is the inconsistency of his side that cost them a place in Europe. He stated that it is proven that when they want, they can get the wins they need as displayed with the against Ulster away from home as they became the only visiting team to win there, but the key issue was to be consistent, which they are not.

The Northampton Saints will now need to concentrate on the Aviva Premiership as they try to keep up the pace with the leading pack and hope to ensure qualification to the playoff as soon as possible.
